Quick Thoughts – “Big Bad Shadow” April Fool’s Special Event

Event summary on the Granblue Fantasy English Wiki.

Yeah, uh, for April Fool’s we got a pretty interesting, unexpected event that lasted for just the day.

Somehow, Vyrn from “Grand Blues”–a Granblue Fantasy comic strip that apparently takes place in an alternate universe–managed to enter the ‘real’ Granblue Fantasy world, and decides to take over it. It’s up to the crew; with the help of Grand Blues’ universe Katalina, Jin, and Ferry; to put a stop to macho Vyrn.

This event was a riot. It was over-the-top, ridiculous, and silly; but a whole lot of fun. I particularly like the goofy Vyrn sung version of 黒銀の翼 (Dark Silver Wings), with somewhat modified lyrics:

The event rewards were purely cosmetic (character outfits for Katalina, Jin, and Ferry), so there was no real harm if people missed the event, but I made sure to get them since they’re cute.

A very fun, enjoyable event. 10/10

Quick Thoughts – “Eye of the Storm” Story Event

Event summary on the Granblue Fantasy English Wiki.

This story event delves into Albert’s past, and why he now travels with the player’s crew. He was leader of the Sky Knights of Levin, and a favorite of the king. But Yurius, one of Albert’s men and someone Albert considered a friend, was deeply jealous of him. One day Yurius was possessed by a primal beast, slayed the king, and disappeared. Since then, Albert has been searching for him.

Lately, Albert’s sword has been glowing, and he suspects Yurius is not far away. Mina, the vice leader of the Sky Knights and the one in charge in Albert’s absence, also surprisingly shows up to inform Albert that he must return to Levin because it’s on the brink of destruction. The confrontation between Yurius and Albert is close at hand.

As the first new story event since Platinum Sky, this one was far more on the serious side. I didn’t particularly care for it, but a number of people in my crew were excited because it featured Aoi Yuuki as the voice of the three Levin sisters–serious Mina, ditzy blonde, and spunky pink hair (I can never remember the name of the other two sisters because the English translation changed all the sisters’ names and confused me). The blonde seems to be particularly popular for some reason.

Also, if C92 rolls around and there happens to be a lot of tentacle themed Granblue Fantasy doujinshi comics, I think we can thank this event for the inspiration.

This was a good event on the loot front. For starters, the event character Albert (light SR) is really good. He has guaranteed double attack or better and a Delay/Slow skill like his SSR counterpart, but has a self ATK and critical rate buff skill instead of being able to charge up his nukes at the cost of a turn. The funny thing is, the self buff is a better skill, and SR Albert is balance type, which has much better synergy with other light characters. Besides weaker stats and lower charge attack damage, it’s arguable that SR Albert is superior to SSR Albert.

The event weapon Blade of the Sourged (SSR unknown dark sword) is quite good. It’s a serviceable unknown weapon with decent stats, and a very solid option for people who didn’t manage to get Second Star (AKA the Tales katana) during the Tales collab in June 2016. Highly recommended for dark players that have one or no dark unknown weapons, since two unknowns is standard in many dark builds (e.g. mixed Axe-Fist Celeste, double Bahamut, Dark Odin, Dark Angel Olivia).

Levin Sisters is similar to Dragon Knights. It has three different call skills, and one is picked at random. They’re a bit more situational than Dragon Knights in my opinion, but they’re all right for light players.

Quick Thoughts: Eternals (Guild War Characters) 5*

You gotta hand it to Cygames. They sure know how to kill hype.

But yeah. They revealed the 5* forms to the Eternals (Guild War characters) a bit over a week ago, and it generated a lot of buzz thanks to the beautiful/cool artwork, considerably buffed skills, and the addition of monstrous 4th skills (which unfortunately can’t be used until 10 turns have passed).

They finally let people know the steps/material requirements three days ago. People had braced themselves for something bad, but I don’t think any of us expected it to be that bad.

To use Seox (Six) as an example:

• You have to collect 40 silver fist shards. These drop from the Dominion Core, which appears from a Nightmare version of the Angel Halo raid. These Nightmare quests appear approximately once every 20 runs of Angel Halo. There is an unknown chance for the Dominion Core to actually drop the shard or not. If we assume the shard drops 50% of the time, that would give an estimate of 16,000 AP (40 [shards] x 10 [Angel Halo AP] x 20 [runs until NM appears] x 2 [divided by 50% shard drop rate]) to collect all 40 shards. And this is during 1/2 AP special quest promotions.
• Collect 300 of each attribute’s quartz. Not that bad in the grand scheme of things, but it’s tough for the general player to collect that much quartz since they also need them to 4* uncap many weapons.
• Fully upgrade a second Six-Ruin Fist (going through all eight steps), then reduce both that Fist and the one you used to recruit Six in the first place.
• Use a gold brick, 10 Damascus crystals, 10 Silver Centrum, and other items to craft a special weapon… which you reduce to obtain a “Weapon Soul”.
• Fight (as Six) against the nine other Eternals, then a special tenth battle. You have to start over if you fail any of the battles.
• Other things I omitted since they aren’t quite as bad as the above.

To sum it up, you need to use at least two gold bricks for the 5* uncap of a GW character. And you will no longer have the original GW weapon you used to recruit that character since you have to reduce it (this hits people pursuing Niyon/Nio 5* and Feower/Quatre 5* particularly hard).

Two gold bricks is no trivial matter. The odds of one dropping from a raid or quest is astronomically low, so the only viable way to obtain them is via trading for them from the shop (of which there is a limited supply), or with 450 Valor Badges in the Unite and Fight event. The latter is not an option to most players because the 275 Valor Badge Sunlight Stone pack is more desirable.

Put another way, you can choose to 5* a GW character, or recruit two other GW characters instead. Many players would like to have 4~5 GW characters, including myself, so 5* uncapping a GW character is beyond our grasp for an extremely long time. Even then, I can’t see myself ever getting more than one GW character to 5* since it’s a pretty troublesome process.

This whole thing has me bummed. Even if you gave me a year, I doubt I could 5* a GW character in that time. And although the 5* buffs are very nice for each character, I don’t think they’re good enough for me to justify spending the effort. Given this information, I’ve decided that I’ll just get Tien (Esser) for my third GW character and then stay put.

At the beginning of the month, Granblue Fantasy (GBF) handed out a week of one free 10 Premium Draw per day; 70 free rolls total. Up to forty of those rolls could be done during the Premium Gala (Legend Festival).

To say the least, I had the most insane lucky streak with the free draws, the likes of which I will probably never see again. All told, I received an improbable 11 SSRs, which amounts to 15.7% of the rolls (the expected SSR draw rate is 6% during Legfest, and 3% outside of it). I got at least one SSR in every single 10 draw.
